Mount Carmel Borough Police is trying to locate the owner of a female Pitbull that was found lying under a vehicle. She appears to have been suffering a heat re...lated emergency. Thanks to some neighbors nearby they gave us some water for her until we could get her back to the Police Department and into the air conditioning. She is doing well since she was brought in from the heat. She has a white and brindle colored coat and has a camouflage type collar on her without any tags. She was scanned for a microchip but, has none. Anyone knowing the owner of this girl please call the non-emergency number to the Northumberland County Communications Center at 570-648-3868. We are limited in housing her since we have no pens, etc but, due to the extreme temps outside we are working to find her some suitable shelter. Please share with your contacts. Thanks! See more

As most people in the borough may have read or heard that this Memorial Day Mt. Carmel will not be having a parade. The Mt. Carmel Area Joint Veterans will still be having events to honor our Veterans starting at 8:14 am Monday at American Legion Post 91 (Ave and Maple), from there they will be proceeding to Susquehanna Bank and the UNB Bank and from there proceed to the cemetaries. Although the program will be different this year the committee made changes due to requirement...s by Penn-Dot. I want to say Thank You to the Veterans that are involved in these ceremonies and as military people adapted and overcome the situation. When I found out and got information this week as to no parade,it upset me to no end. As mayor I brought it to the council meeting tonight. With their support we are working on a solution so we will not have a problem in the future. Long story short, council agreed to allow a parade to run through the borough. I am not sure what we can do but we will have something to support the veterans on Memorial Day so please come out and show you patriotic Thank You to those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom and country.

On Monday evening the street committe, street department and police met to discuss the new ordinance on snow removal in the borough. We know there are bugs and kinks in the new ordinance that we need to work out but we are asking for your assistance in helping to clear the streets. Remember that the street department is made up of 2 full time and 2 part time on call employees. In years past we had 6 full time employees. The authority also assist as in the past with snow remov...al. Several items we feel are important with the winter months and snow removal that are of safety concerns as well. If you live near a fire hydrant take the extra time to please clear the hydrant, as a firefighter myself time is very precious during an emergency. The fire department does carry shovels but it uses valuable time and manpower. When parking on secondary streets (alleys) please do not park across form your neighbors vehicle, remember the emergency vehicles are bigger and wider than cars and can't get through. Also it prevents the plow trucks from getting through and clearing the roadway. If you live near storm drains and you can keep them or open we ask that you do so, this will allow for water to run into them and not dam up and have ice skating rings on the streets and sidewalks. Please try your best to clear the streets when asked or a snow ban is put into use. This is the odd and even side parking that is part of the new ordinance. We will do our best to notify you through the paper and multi-media pages. We ask that you do not put chairs, sawhorses or any other objects out to save a parking spot. Beside being against the borough codes, it prevents the people plowing from doing their job. This is just as bad as a vehicle parked there. and may be removed by the borough employees or police department. Do not throw the snow back out into the streets especially after the plows go through. I have seen several places where this has happened this year. Under the new ordinance contractors that are doing snow removal must register their vehicles with the borough. Please do not pile the snow high, near corners, block storm drains or fire hydrants, it is tough enough seeing around corners. And lastly, help your neighbors, If you see them shoveling or trying to get there car out go over and say hi and see if you can help. If you have a neighbor who can't shovel there walk due to ilness, injury or age please help them. Also check on your neighbors and friends and make sure they are ok with this cold weather. A smile and a helping hand goes a long way. Remember its nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice. Thank you for helping Mt. Carmel to be a better place to live.

The New Year has begun and I want to Thank the people involved for making the celebration happen and everyone that came out to enjoy the night and bring in the new year with us. It was a small start, aproximately 70 people showed up, we had cocoa, coffee, cookies glow sticks and candy canes for those to enjoy compliments of the Clover Hose Co. I want to thank Ed and Tucker Fegley for all their effort in helping to drop an ugly looking replica of a light bulb after the initial... plan failed. We laugh about it and had fun when putting it together but we all enjoyed it when it was lowered from a 60 foot boom and to the sounds of the sirens from the police department. There are so many people who helped in different ways that I am not going mention their names but a heartful Thank You. We enjoyed some music and just socializing in a friendly atmosphere. Tomorrow we will start collecting trees and will be meeting at 6th and Oak Sts. around 1 pm. We will be picking up the trees on the primary streets January 4 and the 11th. I want to Thank everyone in advance for their effort in trying to make Mt. Carmel a better place to live.

I seen in the paper today Dec. 28 about the borough not picking up trees again this year, Last year when this happened, I took it upon myself and with the help of volunteers, we used pick up trucks and trailers to get the trees off the streets. This year we are planning on January 4 and January 11, both Sundays to pick up the trees. We are asking for your cooperation by putting the trees out near the curb amd if you live on a secondary street (alley) that you drag them to a primary street. Thank You.

Well as the end of the year is upon us, I am working with some people to have a little celebration in the Town Park on New Years Eve. This is just a time to get together in a place as a community to welcome in the new year. Open to all the town people, cocoa, coffee and cookies will be on hand for you to enjoy. We will be playing some music through a sound system to give it a little flair. The event will start around 11:30 pm and wrap up around 12:30 am. If you want a place to go and bring your children please come out and join us. Since this is geared towards family and friends, we are asking that this be an alcohol free area. Have Happy and Safe New Year
