Update! Peanut is at home for a very long and intensive recovery plan. The bone was so badly broken that the surgery may not work, so the veterinarians decided not to do surgery until we can see how the bone will heal a bit. Even though she didn't have surgery quite yet, there is still a very long and expensive road to go for peanuts recovery. Please continue to donate to the go fund me and share this post! I have decided to stay closed for one more day to continue my healing process. Today (Monday) we will be closed but I will see everyone during regular hours the rest of the week!

Update: Peanut is still at the veterinarian for monitoring. Her wing is so severely broken that they are not sure a surgery will actually work. We still have a long way to go on the go fund me! And I've decided to offer some incentive... Now that summer clubs, camps, and groups are finally getting back together after covid shut downs, I am beginning to offer in person education classes, and animal interaction events, as well as birthday parties. If you donate $250 or more to the gofundme, your group will receive a customizable 1.5 hour educational and animal interaction session, or birthday party! We are so desperate to make sure peanut is healthy, so please consider donating if you can! And please share this post if you have not already!

I am out of work for the week for my medical treatment and I am not allowed to be near any animals or humans for 7 days! Don't animals always pick the worst times to get injured?! But Peanut was dropped off at the vet this morning for surgery! There is still a very long way to go, so please donate and share if you can!

Peanut was surrendered to Saras Pets and Plants as a pet that was no longer wanted by her previous family. She was stressed, scared, and very unwilling to let anyone near her. It took about 6 months but Peanut has made major progress and now trusts Sara completely. On Friday night, she was out of her cage for enrichment and hopped off the counter. This is something she typically does and is able to use her wings enough to land safely. However, this time she did not land p...roperly and she severely broke her wing. She needs surgery immediately to hopefully repair the break and remove the bone fragments from her body. This situation could have easily been avoided. Unfortunately parrot breeders typically choose to cut parrot wings (in order to prevent them from flying away) before they have learned to properly fly. This is a terrible practice because parrot absolutely need to be able to fly to protect themselves from danger. This is unfortunately the case for Peanut. She was likely not properly fledged and then continued to have her wings cut for her entire life. Since she has been at Saras Pets and Plants she has not had her wings clipped in hopes that they would grow out and she would be able to fly. However, it is likely that she will never be able to fly. Poor Peanut finally chose to trust humans and was finally happy after many years, and now she has a severely broken wing and is in an immense amount of pain. A common misconception is that animal shelters are funded by tax payer dollars and adoption fees. However, most don’t receive government funding, and adoption fees are used only to cover the cost of care animals receive in the shelter. So, the only way for pet rescues to stay open is through donations. With the electi...on, covid and other things going on in life, business has been very slow for us. Bills are very quickly adding up. That being said, I have decided to begin offering a few different options for donating each month! This month here’s how you can donate and help Sara’s Pets and Plants.... - SPONSOR A PET! This month I will be offering a sponsorship program for each pet at the store. Sponsoring provides food, shelter, and medical care for the animals while they wait for their forever home. Each animal can be sponsored for one month for a fee of $50. Each sponsorship will include; a sponsorship certificate and email updates about the animal, the opportunity to meet and interact with the animal that you sponsor, and the satisfaction of helping animals! - DONATE NECESSARY SUPPLIES! Having animals means that I go through a lot of supplies very quickly! I am always in need of paper towels, all purpose cleaner, floor cleaner, any small mammal food, any bird food, any cat food, any cat litter, toys and enclosures, and bedding! - MAKE A MONETARY DONATION! I am so excited to announce that Sara’s Pets and Plants will now be offering a SPONSOR A PET program. As most of you know, we focus our efforts in rescuing and adopting out unwanted or neglected animals. We often take in more animals than we have space for, or animals that have been turned down by other shelters. Although this puts a financial burden on us, the reward of finding an animal their forever home is worth it. Sponsoring a pet will help to provide any necessary me...dical care, food, shelter, etc. while they wait for their forever home. Each animal can be sponsored by a person/family/group for 1 month for $50. After that, you may choose to renew your sponsorship for the next month, or chose a different animals to sponsor! Each sponsorship will include: - A sponsorship certificate, and email updates about the animal - The opportunity to meet and interact with the animal that you sponsor - The satisfaction of helping an animal in need There are so many different animals available to be sponsored!
