As the holiday season approaches, The Galleries at Moore revisits The A. More Store presented by Collaborative Projects Inc. Originally staged in New York’s Soho district and created by members and non-members of Collaborative Projects Inc., The A. More Store was a pop-up Christmas-themed artist store held at The Galleries in 1983. Prices of items sold at the store ranged from 50 cents to $200 for unusual and provocative items including lettered t-shirts, posters, buttons, cl...othing, magazines and novelty items of all kinds. The A. More Store was open to non-members and many Philadelphian artists, particularly Moore students, were expected to participate. The mission of The A. More Store was to offer a service to artists, providing them with an independent, unconventional method of distribution, existing as a collaborative and interactive exhibition. . Visit us via Zoom TOMORROW, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m. for a presentation by Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist, Signe Wilkinson. Wilkinson has been massacring politics in her cartoons since late in the last millennium, most recently in the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News though she's darkened the pages of Ms. Magazine, Organic Gardening and newspapers across the country. As a high school student, she attended Saturday classes at Moore College of Art & Design at the suggestion of her favorite art teacher who was a Moore grad. In 2011, the College recognized her outstanding achievements with a Visionary Woman Award. Register for log-in information with the following link: https://forms.gle/ChDVYynJFvDwTCtv7. Suffragettes employed a variety of methods to amplify their message. These included traditional lobbying, petitioning, parades, pageants, speeches, marches, demonstrations, peaceful protests and even jail, beatings and hunger strikes. Between June and November 1917, 218 protesters from 26 states were arrested and charged with obstructing sidewalk traffic. Lucy Byrne, pictured here, served time in the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia. Join us on Thursday, October 22 at 6 p.m. for another Art at Dinner presentation on Zoom with Graphic Design Professor Gigi McGee. This event is FREE and open to the public. As we gear up for a historic Election Day, take a moment to view the recording of Graphic Design Professor Gigi McGee's Art at Dinner presentation. McGee recently created a poster series celebrating the 100 year anniversary of women's right to vote. This body of work explores three conceptual directions: historic photographs, metaphorical imagery using graphic illustrations combined with engravings of images related to the time period, and a series of compositions highlighting a selection of the key players in suffrage movement. For information on making a COVID safe voting plan, please visit http://www.vote.org.

In early 1997, Swiss artist Roman Signer was featured in Moore College of Art & Design’s International Discovery Series. This series featured artists whose reputations were established largely outside of the United States but were not well known to American audiences. The Galleries at Moore's BOOM: Explosive Trends in Contemporary Performance, Video, and Sculpture was the first major presentation and examination of Roman Signer’s work to take place in North America. . Thro...ughout his career, Signer combined performance (or what he called actions),multimedia sculpture and installation while engaging natural elements of wind and fire in his works. The exhibition featured drawings, videos and sculptures documenting Signers' actions and a live demonstration of one of his actions performed on opening night. His time sculptures, collections of objects that he arranged to react to either an explosion or their settings, were regarded as slapstick views of psychological processes and surreal spectacles. Over time, many of Signer's works changed at their own will while exhibited, resulting in a different visual experience for each work depending on the day and time. Known as one of the finest representatives of process and conceptual art, Roman Signer's exhibition of works held at The Galleries showcased an artwork's ability to exist in accommodation to uncontrollable forces like time and natural elements. . This is an extraordinary time to be a painter. Images are everywhere. Glowing handheld screens blur the boundaries of public and private as images and videos are telecast in real time. The virtual world has transformed the physical world and painting has, in many ways, defiantly resisted this transformation. But it is clear that we are in a significant moment of technological and spatial shifting and we cannot deny that the conditions for making and viewing painting have ra...dically changed. Painting is a record of bodily movement and a marker of time. In this moment of technological revolution, what is the role of the gesture? Of physical space? What is left if these central elements are undone or become distrusted? Join us on Tuesday, September 29 at 6 p.m. for another Art at Dinner presentation on Zoom with Associate Professor Robert Goodman. This event is FREE and open to the public.
