Pickering Creek Audubon Center’s local landscape is a mosaic of residences, farmland and forest. In addition to considering the Center’s existing infrastructure we have also considered the landscape context within which Pickering Creek resides. Pickering Creek’s forests and the adjacent forestland are important for forest interior dwelling bird species including the wood thrush, the yellow-billed cuckoo, the scarlet tanager and the ovenbird. Anchored by Pickering Creek’s 400... acres, there are more than 4,000 acres of forest in the surrounding landscape, much of it in nearly contiguous forest corridors. Of these 4,000 acres, an estimated 1,535 acres have been protected either as public land or through the voluntary actions of willing landowners using primarily conservation easements to ensure the permanent protection of land. Taken together, Pickering’s forests and those neighboring it represent an opportunity to create a single unified forest block that would significantly benefit breeding and migrating forest birds of the Atlantic Flyway including the wood thrush. Increased forestland protection will improve water quality through uptake of nutrients and reduction of sediment entering the Wye River watershed.
