I have thought a lot over the last few days about the words patriot and sedition. How that sadly "patriotism" has been hijacked by Trump and taken on a negative connotation for many. That seeing the American flag has become synonymous with a single party that has been led by a racist, sexist dictator for the past four years. This week the world watched while a mob dressed in everything from camo gear to animal pelts to flag capes with the common thread of red Trump hats an...d flags (Confederate, Trump, and American) stormed the United States Capitol. Perhaps it made the event more fun to be in an irreverent costume as they desecrated the center of our country's government while it was convening to certify the Electoral College results. This frenzy was flamed by Trump when he spoke for over an hour, inciting the rally into a riot with his baseless allegations, demanding all to "Stop the Steal." Sedition is defined as "conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state or monarch." Trump, in committing sedition, was counting on his followers to attempt to turn him from head of state to monarch. Our clients have fled dictatorships, countries where they can be put death for their religion, race, sexual orientation. Some have given up all they had or risked their lives to come to America. They understand what it means to be a patriot. Yet so many have lived the past four years in fear under an aggressively anti-immigrant, racist administration. During COVID, they have been your nurses and doctors in the ICU fighting to save; working in the grocery store, factory, or farm to keep the food chain going; there is not an industry not heavily supported by immigrants although many of them will not receive a stimulus check or any type of aid. We have now ELECTED a new administration, but we cannot forget what we have allowed to happen in and to this Country. The time to be complacent or silent is long gone. Over 400 anti-immigrant Executive Orders and policies were implemented under the Trump administration. Highlights include a refugee and Muslim band; basically disbanding the asylum system; forcing 60,000 migrants to remain in Mexico while awaiting to fight for their asylum case; expelled over 100,000 unaccompanied children before they could even try to fight for asylum; separated children from parents, putting kids in cages - nearly 500 of whom will never be reunited with their parents; stripped Immigration Judges of their power and placed quota systems on their rulings; suppressed voters by delaying citizenship for 600,000 applicants; economically paralyzed small and large companies by banned nearly all employment based visas using the COVID-19 pandemic as a pretext....the list goes on. Let's move ahead to fight for change and let's not forget.
